The Story of a Teen Artist Who Finds His Place

NIA PROJECT: Access & Exposure To Industries

Question:

What happens when you take a talented youth who does not know the extent of his brilliance and you add in a village of family and industry experts who want to see him reach his fullest potential?

Answer:

JOY! Pure joy and love.

💙💙💙

Meet Semaj, a wonderfully gifted young artist who was embraced by Onyx Fine Arts Collective and who has his art on display for purchase in their current summer Pacific Place gallery installation located at 600 Pine St, Seattle, WA 98101.

Semaj has been drawing and sketching since he was putting characters on his elementary school math homework instead of numbers. He has a wonderful spirit and a profound story to tell about what his art means and why he is sharing it with the world. Kinara Park Kids sponsored 14-year-old Semaj for his debut Artists Call on Saturday, June 3, 2023. We were delighted to see this young man celebrated and loved in such a beautiful way. He seemed to have one million questions, but none that couldn't be answered by his new Onyx family of mentors. The exhibit reception was Saturday, June 25, 2023, and the whole village came out!

Special thanks to Maria McDaniel, Earnest D. Thomas, Ashby D. Reed, Jr., Connie Thomas, Sharon Sobers-Outlaw, and Myron Curry, for your words of encouragement and guidance along this process. Your commitment makes this work possible.

A very special thanks to the parents and family of Semaj for sharing him with us and for encouraging his gift these many years.

We all light up when we find our PURPOSE! NIA PROJECT: Access & Exposure To Industries We provide full access to an industry that exists beyond reach for many African-American and BIPOC youth. We guide and facilitate the workshop participant toward making a connection with how they fit into the world, either directly or indirectly through this work.
