They say that one remembers their rst experience as more of a reference point and not
a dening moment for the rest of life’s surprises. In sports one can draw from it. For
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, his rst win will be a reference. How can it not be? The Se-
ahawks played some of the worst oensive football in team history. It can’t be all that bad, you say?
Okay, how about this? The Seahawk's rst three oensive possessions were an interception and two
back-to-back punts. Up next was a eld goal followed by a safety, then a touchdown, then another
safety! Yes, the Seahawks oense scored 10 rst-half points and gave up two safeties. The saving
grace for the Seahawks was the play of their defense. How good were the Seahawks under defensive
mastermind and head coach Mike Macdon-ald? Try exceptional. Despite the oense's transgressions, they went into the halftime break, down 13-9. The Hawks’ defense had itsinterception in the first half and another in the second half. Whatever was said during the
halftime break inspired the oense. The of- sense scores a touch-down and a eld goal to take a 19-13 lead.
The defense pitched a third-quarter shutout and allowed the Broncos one
fourth-quarter touchdown while the oense tacked another touchdown for good measure. So the
Mike Macdonald era began with a thrilling 26-20. So, coach, how did you feel about that win?
“Yeah, it was a great win. We started just like we wanted it to start. Drew it up that way. I just want-
ed some adversity there. Yeah, also going to clean all that stu up in the rst half, “ said Macdonald
after the game. “ Tell you what, on the sideline with our crew, the guys were poised. Nobody batted
an eye. Knew what we needed to do to win the game, stuck to the plan, made some adjustments,
and just kept playing. It's a long game. These games go 60 minutes down to the wire. Proud of our
guys and the eort and the attitude, togetherness.”
