Gracie Mae Williams was born on February 8, 1942, in Robinsonville, Mississippi, to Lillie and Freddie Lee Williams. She had one older brother, and she was the first of six girls. She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where she attended Geeter High School. When Gracie reached 18 she moved to Seattle to help raise her brother’s four children. In Seattle Gracie enrolled in Beauty School and upon completion opened up her own beauty shop called Ebony Design on 14th and Union. She operated her shop for many years.
