How Elders' Aspirations Shape Youthful Ambitions
By Chardonnay Beaver
There’s an interesting encounter that happens as you growing-up. There's a unique experience that isn’t often discussed but isn’t limited to Gen Z.
When older generations witness your growth, something within them is activated—like a former football star watching their child play. They see in you what they were and weren't, wanting you to be better, dream bigger, and go further. When their desires align with yours, this encouragement can be beautiful. But when those desires diverge, the line between motivation and imposing becomes thin.
Elders begin to dream a life for the youth that the youth don’t desire.
There’s a “if I were your age again” syndrome that doesn’t serve as advising. Some elders often project their own experiences onto youth, not as advice but as fears of repeating past mistakes. While well-intentioned, this can create a culture that fears failure. Yet, some failures are necessary for growth. Elders can't prevent the development youth must undergo, and youth shouldn't ignore the wisdom of age.
When you're young, you're pursuing goals—striving, working, reaching. As you age, you reflect on your efforts, missteps, and achievements.
Words of Wisdom by Char of The Week: Regardless of age, we should all strive toward purpose. If you're breathing, there's more work to do. Youth are less inspired by what you say, and more by what you do. If your life could speak, what would it communicate? 1 Timothy 4:12
