Emma T. Cotton receives IPAA for Community Service

Congratulations to Mrs. Emma T. Cotton, 2024 recipient of the Sound Generation Inspire Positive Aging Award (IPAA) for Outstanding Community Service! The announcement was made this month during the 19th Annual IPAA Luncheon and Resource Fair held at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. KIRO TV’s Emmy winning anchor Monique

Ming-Laven was the guest MC. The program included performances by Poet Ben Yisrael and NAAM’s African American Cultural Ensemble (ACE) with keyboardist Kent Stevenson.

Mrs. Emma Cotton has a history of longevity in service to several community organizations. She is a perfect example of how to share your talents with others no matter what your age. Through her actions, she demonstrates to her peers and younger generations what it means to be a blessing to others. A member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for 67 years, she volunteers in the office, is President of the Senior Ministry and Past President of the Senior Usher Ministry and Breakfast Ministry. She volunteers at the Rainier Food Bank (40 years), Central Area Senior Center (40 years) and the Queen Anne Homeless Shelter (4 years). She is also a life member of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

The panel of judges who reviewed nomination submissions for six categories of recognition included the following in the printed program: Affectionately called “Mama Cotton” by many, this mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother is a vessel of love, care, and support. She plays a key role in connecting people and keeping them informed.
