The story deals with the obvious and covert conflicts that limit the possibility of personal growth and social progress. Themes of jealousy and social classism play in the backdrop of fraternal joy and cultural pride. Written by Charles Fuller and premiered off-Broadway with the Negro Ensemble Company in 1981, “A Soldier’s Play” had a historic first run and earned the 1982 Critics Circle Best Play Award and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. Legendary actors like Denzel Washington, David Alan Grier, and Blair Underwood have played the iconic roles of Waters, Davenport, and Peterson.
