April 4th marked the 57th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee (MLKCC) declared the day a Day of Remembrance, honoring the enduring legacy of Dr. King and the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
This year’s theme, “Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future,” invited the community to reflect on the sacrifices made in the name of justice, pay tribute to the memory of Dr. King, and recom-mit to building a more inclusive society. The event also recognized the local heroes, past and present, whose work has furthered the cause of equity and civil rights.
The commemorative program featured a powerful keynote address by Rev. Dr. Leslie D. Braxton, who delivered an impassioned message about justice, unity, and the responsibility of future gen-erations. He is joined in the photo with Rev. Pamela Taylor South and Rev. Dr. Linda Smith.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of MLKCC’s annual community awards, honoring individuals who embody the spirit and legacy of Dr. King:
